Ex1 : Writing Task 1

Exercise 1 : Writing Task 1

The chart below shows the percentage of households in a city using different sources of energy from 2010 to 2020.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Household Energy Sources (2010–2020)

Year Solar Energy Wind Energy Electricity from Fossil Fuels Other Renewable Sources
2010 5% 8% 75% 12%
2012 7% 10% 70% 13%
2014 12% 14% 65% 9%
2016 18% 20% 55% 7%
2018 25% 28% 45% 2%
2020 35% 35% 25% 5%

Things to do in your answer:

  • Highlight trends (increasing/decreasing).

  • Compare different energy sources.

  • Avoid giving opinions—just describe the data.

Sample Answer

The table illustrates the percentage of households in a city using different energy sources from 2010 to 2020.

Overall, there is a clear shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources over the decade. In 2010, the majority of households (75%) relied on electricity from fossil fuels, while solar and wind energy accounted for only 5% and 8% respectively. Over time, the use of solar and wind energy increased steadily, reaching 35% each by 2020.

In contrast, the dependence on fossil fuels declined sharply, falling to 25% by 2020. Other renewable sources fluctuated slightly but remained relatively low throughout the period, starting at 12% in 2010 and ending at 5% in 2020.

This data indicates a significant move towards sustainable energy, with solar and wind becoming the main sources of household energy, while fossil fuels are gradually being phased out.
