Comprehension
1. Coral reefs, often called the “rainforests of the sea,” are some of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet. They support a vast range of marine life, providing shelter, food, and breeding grounds for numerous species. Coral reefs cover less than 1% of the ocean floor but are home to more than 25% of marine species.
2. Coral reefs are not only important for marine biodiversity but also for humans. They protect coastlines from erosion and storm surges, and they support fishing industries and tourism, providing jobs and income for millions of people worldwide.
3. Unfortunately, coral reefs are under severe threat due to climate change, overfishing, and pollution. Coral bleaching, caused by rising ocean temperatures, weakens the reefs and makes them more vulnerable to disease and death. Studies estimate that if current trends continue, more than 90% of the world’s coral reefs could be lost by 2050.
4. Efforts are being made globally to protect and restore coral reefs. Marine protected areas, sustainable fishing practices, and coral farming are some of the methods being employed to preserve these ecosystems. However, without significant action to reduce carbon emissions and curb global warming, these efforts may not be enough.
5. Scientists emphasize the urgency of addressing climate change to save coral reefs. Protecting these ecosystems is not only essential for marine life but also for the millions of people who depend on them for their livelihood.
